Do you still read print magazines?
Mar 31, 2025
I absolutely love it when some of my comments get published in actual print magazines. There's just something special about seeing your words printed on glossy paper that feels uniquely satisfying. Some of you might already know that I regularly write the quarterly Ethics Column in the BACP's Private Practice Journal, which is a privilege and a joy, though sadly, it's not something that's readily accessible to the wider public. As a result, it's always been a bit tricky to share these articles or, let’s be honest, casually drop into conversations: "Did you catch my latest Ethics Column?" when the journal itself isn't exactly on everyone's coffee table.
That's why it's especially thrilling whenever I'm quoted in magazines that you might find at your local newsagents or supermarket. Even if it's just a sentence or two, it gives me a lovely little buzz. The other day, I had some comments published in Women’s WeeklyMagazine, and yes, I did a tiny internal celebration when I saw my words printed right there among articles about fashion tips and celebrity gossip.
Interestingly, despite this excitement, I must confess to a certain irony here. The only printed materials I regularly buy these days are crossword puzzle books. They've become my go-to for unwinding and relaxing, and I genuinely enjoy that tangible experience of pen meeting paper. So really, I suppose I haven't much room to moan about the decline in printed magazines and journals. Still, I can't deny feeling nostalgic for the days when a magazine subscription arriving through the post was a weekly highlight.
But even in our digital age, there's something enduringly delightful about being quoted in print. It's a tangible reminder that our words can reach places we might never expect, nestled between the pages of everyday stories and relatable features. Perhaps that's why, even as someone who's fully embraced the online world professionally, those printed moments remain so wonderfully satisfying.
