I picked this up during my EMDR training:
Bessel van der Kolk's 'The Body Keeps the Score' is a pivotal read that deeply explores how trauma reshapes the body and mind. I regularly recommend it for its insightful look into healing and recovery.
The one I probably recommend most often:
Nina W. Brown's 'Children of the Self-Absorbed' offers invaluable insights for those navigating the challenges of dealing with self-absorbed parents. Just be aware that many people find this very difficult to read, as it can open people's eyes to behaviours they have normalised in the past.
A long read, but worth it:
Gabor Maté's 'When the Body Says No' explores the critical link between stress, emotional well-being, and chronic illness. I often recommend it for its profound insights into how our emotions influence our health.
Learn how to say 'no' and mean it:
Gavin de Becker's 'The Gift of Fear' is a crucial read for understanding instinctual safety signals. It empowers readers to trust their intuition in dangerous situations. My favourite quote by de Becker is: “When a man says no it's the end of a discussion. When a woman says no it's the beginning of a negotiation."
This one is perfect for every day use"
Rick Hanson's 'Just One Thing' is a treasure trove of simple practices for lasting happiness. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to enrich their life with positive neuroplasticity techniques, one small practice at a time.
A great one to work through with your young person:
Kate Collins-Donnelly's 'Starving the Anger Gremlin' is a brilliant resource for managing anger in young people. I often recommend it for its engaging, practical exercises that effectively reduce anger. It can be used independently by the reader, or together with a parent or caregiver.
This is where I learnt about Habit Stacking:
James Clear's 'Atomic Habits' is a game-changer in understanding and changing habits. It contains practical strategies to build good habits and break bad ones, transforming your life. Anyone who has had a CBT session with me, will probably have been told about habit stacking.
CBT Anchors!
As anyone who has had CBT with me will know, coloured sticky dots are the simplest form of an anchor you can find.
If you haven't got a journal yet, use this one:
I like the elastic strap, pen loop, and ribbon. Oh and the fact that it comes in so many different colours. And of course I have bought mine in Cambridge Therapy Centre Turquoise!
A fun way to get started
If you'd like to work more creatively, but don't know how, this is a good way to get you started with little mini-projects that don't have to be perfect.
